friends

So, life at university is going swimmingly and you’ve made a good few friends. Perhaps now it’s time to break away from halls and look into sharing a place together, as you head into your second year? Or maybe, you and your mates are just on the hunt for somewhere new and have decided to do it together!

When looking for student accommodation, not only is it a good idea to get in good and early to check out a few decent properties and ensure you bag somewhere nice, but you’ll need to know you’re going to all get on, before you commit to living together.

There’s a lot to be said for being good friends to start with, but do they have any little habits that might get on your nerves if you share a living space with them?

If you’re a bit anxious about the big step of moving in together and are wondering how to get on with your Leicester student housemates, here is a handy guide with a few of our favourite tips for you to consider.

Top Tips from Westmanor Student Living

  • Learn to communicate – set boundaries from the start, be open and honest.
  • Discuss your expectations before you move in.
  • Have mutual respect – for each other’s beliefs, schedules, possessions and individuality.
  • Set up a rota – for cleaning of any communal areas, cooking together etc.
  • Keep the shared living space clean and tidy – a mess can get pretty annoying to most!
  • Do your own dishes, or take it in turns – again a rota might help.
  • Ensure fairness in all things – such as who does what jobs around the house.
  • Share the cost of the things you all use, such as cleaning products.
  • Be patient and understanding – not everyone might think the way you do.
  • Be flexible and prepared to compromise.
  • Ask before you borrow/ help yourself to something (including food)!
  • Only play loud music if it’s ok with all your flatmates (and neighbours)!
  • Make an effort to get to know your flatmates.
  • Always knock on a bedroom door that’s closed and respect the need for privacy! (This includes when people are on the phone).
