Students in Summer

The long hot summer is stretching out ahead of us and if you are a university student you might be looking at an even bigger holiday period than ever before.

It’s certainly a good chance to recharge those batteries and have a good rest after all of the studying, so make the most of the time to de-frazzle your brain, by catching up on any sleep you need, relaxing and having fun.

There are also some other really useful ways to spend the summer holidays, so, before you whack on the bikini and spend the next nine weeks on the beach, check out these summer tips for university students and make the most of your time off while you’ve got it.

See the world

If you don’t have the capacity to do a gap year, maybe take the opportunity to get a bit of travelling in now. There are some really cheap ways to get about for student travellers, so, if you’re prepared to rough it a little, this could be your chance to discover some fascinating places on the planet that you’ve never seen before.

Before you go, ensure you have enough money for food, accommodation and travel while you’re there, have adequate travel insurance, are up to date on the vaccinations required and have an emergency cash supply should you lose your wallet.

Make the most of your money

By the end of the academic year, funds might be running a little low, so how about considering getting some temporary employment to improve your bank account, give yourself some valuable work experience, or improve on your CV.

Also, take the chance to look at your expenditure over the last year and see how and where savings can be made moving forward. Look at your bank statements and put things into categories of things which are necessary and unnecessary, as well as things which could be cheaper, such as energy bills. Have you also, for example, worked out whether you should be paying council tax, have overpaid tax on any work you’ve done and cancelled your TV licence for the summer period?

Set a budget for yourself which is spread out over the year and doesn’t involve blowing all your student loan in one go (and stick to it). Then go into the next student year more financially astute and see how much further your money can stretch.

If you know anybody looking for Leicester accommodation

Above all, make sure that your time off is productive, whether it’s a rest, more money, greater work experience or some fun that you need. This way you will go into the next year refreshed, with a better, more focused outlook that will see you ready for the work ahead.
