It’s hard to believe that this academic year has already come to an end for Leicester students, but if you haven’t already started packing up for the summer, then now is the time to start giving it a go.
Moving out of your Leicester student accommodation for the summer doesn’t only mean chucking your stuff in a bag and heading home. There are lots of things to think about to make sure that you don’t encounter any problems once you’ve moved on. In this blog we explore the important jobs to get done before you close that front door for the final time.
What To Do Before You Move Out
If you are renting student accommodation, then you will doubtless have paid a deposit before you moved in to cover any damage, repairs, or cleaning costs that become necessary after you have moved out.
Once you have returned the keys, at our earliest convenience we will conduct an inspection of the flat to check for cleanliness, any damages that may be present and genuine remedial works that may be required.
The way to ensure you get that deposit back is to make sure the property is in as good order as it was when you moved in. So, if you haven’t been the cleanest or tidiest of people, then you need to check the following:
- Dustbins are not overloaded and rubbish bags are in the correct bin.
- Bathrooms are spotless – this includes removing limescale from and cleaning shower heads, shower screens and taps and making sure the toilets and basins are completely clean.
- Ensure the kitchen is clean and tidy – this includes making sure the oven, microwave, fridge and washing machine are thoroughly cleaned.
- Clean out all drawers, wardrobes and other storage space, remove all litter and wipe drawers and cupboards down inside and out.
- Check for any stains on mattresses, furniture or carpets and have the stains removed if present.
- Check that blinds are not left tangled, broken or with slats missing.
- Inspect walls for any blu-tac – this should be removed.
- Wipe down all surfaces and hoover and mop the floors.
- Clear any outside areas that have become untidy during your stay.
If you need any further information on how to ensure your property is as clean and tidy as it needs to be, then we have information and a useful checklist available to give you a helping hand.
Remember To Return Your Keys
Before you leave, it is important to check that all heaters and other electrical appliances are switched off. (Only switch the freezer off once it has been thoroughly defrosted). Make sure any
Landlord supplied WiFi routers are left in the property and then, when you have finally closed the door for the last time, remember to return all keys or key fobs and pre-paid electric or gas meter cards.
